Local artists

Exclusive creations from passionate artists from South Africa

The first artist in our Mzansi family is Desiree Smith, born in 1983 in Vereening, Gauteng. She established her own labels Deziree Fine Arts and Whimsical Collection and is able to live out her dream of being a full-time artist. She lives with her family in in the artist town of Fishhoek, Cape Town. Even though her works already adorn the walls of private collectors and luxury hotels in South Africa, they are also traded internationally. However her heart remains in Africa, where she always finds new inspiration for her fascinating collections.

In her breathtaking portraits of women, the passionate painter manages to capture not only the beauty and grace, but also the pride and personality of African women. Deziree Fine Arts is like a mirror travelling through Africa showcasing the crowns of creation in their most beautiful costume and colour.

The Whimsical Collection, on the other hand, is completely different. Here the focus is solely on the animal, which is impressively staged. Each of her collections is based on a special aura and theme. The “Wildlife at Leisure” series is almost a funny and cute depiction of African animals lounching on imposing sofas. We particularly love the fact that not only does the cute elephant make it onto the red couch, but also the “underdog” of the African savannah, the wild dog, has found a comfortable place on a funky sofa. Of course, the Big 5 can also shine in a captivating play of colors, similar to a rising and setting sun, in “Wildlife in Colour”. The leopard sneaks through a carpet of colors as if magically made up from pieces of a rainbow.

The power of the colours, the passion in each brush stroke, is allowing us insights into the African soul which Desiree Smith captures in her paintings. Her work is inspiring us and keeping us entranced like Africa itself.

Finely designed

Craftsmanship at the highest level

The artist captures the joie de vivre of Africa and transforms it into a visual representation (e.g. oil, acrylic on canvas). As part of the artisanal process, the actual art image is printed on material and then lovingly handcrafted into a stylish handbag, a beautiful cosmetic bag or an enchanting cushion cover.

This process is carried out by trained crafts(wo)men according to specially designed patterns and is custom made for each product individually. The employees (makers) in our selected studios are not only perfectly trained for their task, but also contribute to the quality and exclusivity of the unique pieces with their passion for creating something extraordinary.

Authentic workshops

Committed personalities with high standards and pride in their work

We take a look behind the scenes and introduce some crafts(wo)men. Of course, this is only a small part of the dedicated team and they are representatives of this dedicated work collective.

Whimsical Collections Studio in Muizenberg, the beautiful surfer’s paradise in False Bay, near the Cape of Good Hope, employs about 20 permanent staff. These full-time employees are supported by external labor collectives and freelancers.

Connie is a passionate seamstress. She has turned her absolute passion into a job. Her favourite model is the Maxi Tote Bag because it’s the best format to show off Africas culture and passion. Fundie

Fundiswa Mgidi, Whimsical Studio, Kapstadt, Südafrika

She is the home decor specialist. Her area of responsibility includes, among other designs, the production of the beautiful placemats and table linen. Snell loves the moment she holds the finished product in her hands, but also raves about the well-functioning cooperation, the interplay of different talents and strengths during this development process. In essence all of our finely designed products carry a piece of this great team within.

Talent

Talent Sithole, Whimsical Studio, Kapstadt, Südafrika

Talent, her pet name alone sounds like dance and music: “Makulo Thali Thali” radiates just like this fun-loving and optimistic power woman. Talent is the driving force behind logistical execution. She makes sure that the products are correctly packed and delivered to us. She carefully checks each product once again. Talent is not only a positive and great woman, with her the goods get a final touch of African joie de vivre before the package is closed and sent off.

High quality

Exceptional manufacturing and processing

Our products are not only valuable pieces of art, they are also durable and long lasting quality products. Because every item is designed on site and authentically “made in South Africa” in every step, we can asess the manufacturing process and the materials used. From the make of the core materials (robust and natural cotton or resource-saving recycled PET bottles), to the zipper and the snap button that securely closes the bag. Together with our supplier we work on product improvements and concepts for new articles and product lines.

It is important for us that we not only have a geographical, but also an emotional closeness to our manufacturer. Because just as we and our customers value the highest quality, it is a proverbial (red) guideline for the Whimsical team to only deliver a flawless and high-quality product. This is also shown, for example, by the fact that we enclose a handwritten card with the signature and name of the seamstress for certain collections, because they are proud of their work.

Dynamic Concepts

A gathering of creative thoughts

For our cooperation we are looking for passionate artists and manufacturers who can implement our ideas and ideas creatively. When developing products, we focus on local know-how and rely on the empirical values of the suppliers coupled with the requirements of our customers.

Innovative product ideas

Resource-saving production according to the principle of sustainability

In addition to quality-oriented production and processing, Mzansi Trading focuses on sustainability and ecological progress. We research alternative materials that do not burden our global resources and protect the environment. We design our own collections, which we adapt specifically to the needs of the European market.
